Introduction

Skills required in the twenty first century workplace

As a recent grad, the next step for me is to seek a position as an entry level software engineer. I am confident I can find a job and make a positive impact on the company I work for. However, before I start my career, there are a few skills I should work on. If a company is looking for a skilled engineer, it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of basic skills, so I thought I would compile a list of them. This list is not an exhaustive list, so feel free to add some to it.

Skill can be defined as carrying out of a task smoothly with pre-determined results by incorporating  specifically acquired capacity(Boyles, 2012; Cappelli, 2012;Fama & French, 2010).The skill of the workforce are considered as integral for the organization because it forms the backbone that determines the quality of productivity of the employees and overall performance of the organization in turn. Hence, employers who appoint unskilled employees usually run the risk of experiencing higher incurrence of overhead cost in the form of great employee errors and lower productivity in comparison (Vincent, 2010). However, the major problem of 21st century workplace is that there is discrepancy in the skills required in the corporate sector and the skills that the workforce possesses. As a result of this skill shortage, several positions in companies remain vacant (Burrus, Jacksonand Steinberg, 2013). .  

In order to identify the skills needed in 21stcentury organizations, Fadel, (2011) finds out thatamong the essential skills that are required by the workforce of 21st century include critical thinking and problem solving abilities, creativity and innovation, collaborative nature. In addition to these learning and innovation related skills, the 21st century companies also seek certain information, media and technology related skill such as literacy in information and media technology. Some career related skills are also sought after by these contemporary companies in their employees, which include flexibility and adaptability, enthusiasm to take initiatives, self-directive abilities, productivity and willingness to show accountability to the company, leadership qualities and the keenness to take responsibilities (Fadel, 2011). 

The research of findings of Burrus et al., (2013) add further to the study of Fadel by stating that 21st century companies seek some proficiencies in the workforce in the form of mechanical skills, cultural literacy, business literacy, information processing skills, visual acuity and communicational skills. The report of National Institute for Professional Practice (2017) categorize workplace skills in to four clusters and indicate them as integral to achieving success in 21st century workplace. The clusters include digital age literacy, inventive thinking, effective communication and high productivity. Inventive thinking refers to the ability of an individual to think in an innovative and exceptional manner and implement it in working. 

High productivity refers to the skills of an employee to work under pressure and meet the company objectives by means of enhanced rate of productivity.  By effective communication, the organizations mean that the employees should be able to clearly communicate with a wide range of audiences. Finally, digital age literacy implies that candidates should have basic computer literacy along with the ability to compute numbers, solve problem, encore and decode digital information and have proper understanding of the manner in which technology could be used for achieving a specific purpose.  

With a remarkable 14% increase in the number of jobs for MBAs worldwide, the management schools and applicants are being optimistic of seeing more jobs in the coming times. The job market globally looked robust in 2013 with almost all continents including Europe, Asia, US, witnessing a growth in the number of MBAs getting hired by the leading companies and the best in the business.

Challenges in employability and skill deficiency in present workforce.

In spite of appreciable growth in domestic economy, unemployment remains a pertinent problem for Indians due to skill shortage (Hajela, 2012).  In order to identify the challenges in employability in India, Khare (2014) conducts research to find out that in the coming years the demand for labour will remain robust and high in India. However, as this demand will be exclusively meant for the skilled and qualified employees so lack of employability will remain as a challenge for Indian population, The scholar further finds out that the format of higher education system of India and lack of proficient teaching personnel in technical and professional education sector are the major challenges that fail to meet the specific employability demand of the country. Of late, however, social advertising has turned into a haven for marketing, sales, and networking. Great content for your individual brand’s blog is an excellent start, but how about spreading the term to be able to appeal to more readers? In conclusion, the above skills are the ones that I think are most important for a modern engineer to be familiar with. This list is by no means exhaustive, but if you keep these skills in mind as you learn more about computer science (or software engineering, or electrical engineering, etc.). While a degree in engineering isn’t a prerequisite to becoming an engineer, it’s a great idea to grab a science degree if you want to become an engineer. Whether you’re a newbie or an experienced engineer, the skills and knowledge you’ve gained will come in handy in your Skill Tool-Kit
